Australia

I would highly recommend Australia as a long travel destination!

Why Australia? What drives you to travel?

Australia is MASSIVE! Much bigger than the map.. try to get as much done as you can, or just stay in one place, its up to you. The travelling and roadhouses I found fun but the beaches are also beautiful, if you want a beach to yourself go West, if you want parties and beaches, go east. Australia is your oyster.

You can see the route I took above, working and travelling. You’ll need to be under 30 to get a working holiday visa unless you’re just planning a flat down move or a 3 month trip. That apart you can always find local work in hostels from wherever you are.

Where to find work when backpacking

If you’re looking for work, there’s loads in Sydney, plenty of bars and plenty of stuff to do. I managed to get a call centre job where they paid $22 an hour, managed to save up a load, plus they had an awesome xmas party on a boat past the Opera House = sweet times.

You will find what you’re looking for in Sydney, has a lot of love to offer 🙂

They have a restaurant in the Opera house, its brilliant, best way to get inside.

If backpacking I suggest finding a hostel in Bondi Beach. There are some in the centre but only move there if you want to be closer to work.

There are any hidden wonders in Australia, this I found, can’t remember where it was which is helpful but it was on a tour and we weren’t expecting it. It’s well worth booking on the tours in the cities, saves you risking it by buying a run-down car and they always have hidden gems like this view on-route.

Australian Tour Companies

There are many tour operators in Australia and you will easily find them in any town you are visiting, I remember Peter Pans Travel, they were pretty decent;

These are some of the tour operators you could come across;

  • Intrepid Travel.
  • Adventure Tours Australia.
  • Ultimate Travel.
  • Discovery Nomads.
  • Under Down Under Tours.
  • INTRO Travel.
  • Peter Pans Travel

Twelve Apostles above, loads of tourists there but worth a view, wouldn’t stay long due to the busyness, but the road it is off is a good drive. I recommend renting cars from each city you visit, good way to look around and take your time. When I was at the 12 apostles we had taken a tour, we didn’t have long to stay, but like I said, a lot of people…

Even when on tour on a coach if your randomly lucky you may come up with a snap like this! Somehow managed to catch a wild Kangaroo and Emu in the same shot!

If you like exploring caves, Australia can be the place, there are often cave paintings to be seen (but watch out for snakes.) On one tour a baby brown snake had hidden in the tyre of the tour bus. When we got off the bus I stepped straight over it, I warned the others and the tour guide informed the people in the petrol station. We then drove off, well the tour guide drove off and us with her.

Looking behind me in the back window I could see a young lad holding a snake box to pick it up and chuck it back in the bush. I had never seen anyone look so worried. Baby brown snakes are deadly in one bite as they don’t know how to control their venom yet and will just give a full dose.

This is the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Sydney, near China Town, its a beautiful garden to go visit and so you should when in Sydney!

Most places to visit in Australia contain a lot of rocks, alike this one, looks like a Hippo.
